The basketball free throw is a very significant part in the game of basketball because scoring every free throw shot means that you gain essential points that could decide whether your team wins or not. Free throws, in a basketball game, are awarded when a player is fouled in the act of shooting. A player is given two free throws he is fouled in the process of shooting anyplace within the 3-point line and 3 free throws he is fouled in the process of shooting outside the 3-point line. The free throw line is about 15 feet away from the basket and when the player attempts to take his free throw, no defenders are permitted to block the shot.

Below are some tips on how to properly execute your free throw:

1. Line Up for the Shot – once you line up for the shot, place your lead foot directly lined up to the rim’s center. Try to square your shoulders to the hoop and ensure that your shooting elbow is towards the basket. Put the ball on your hand with your shooting hand facing the basket, while your non-shooting hand balances the ball.

2. Relax and Concentrate – the mental aspect when it comes to shooting a free throw should never be underestimated, especially when the points that are going to be made from free throw scores are essential in winning the game. When trying to make a free throw, ensure that you are relaxed to clear your mind. Concentrating on the hoop only while bouncing the ball a few times will help you to time your shot perfectly.

3. Take the Shot – as soon as you are ready to shoot the ball, try bending your knees while using an up and down motion from your legs to give your shot enough momentum. In a fluid-like motion, try aiming your shot towards the rim front and straighten your knees while releasing your shot. Ensure that you give your shot a follow through as you try to flick the ball with your wrist in order to propel the ball towards the hoop.

There are many ways how to score a free throw and it depends on the player’s height and playing style. Constant practice is what makes every free throw shot perfect.
